Constipation in dogs can be relatively easy to treat depending on the cause. In some cases it can be managed at home with gentle exercise and encouraging your pet to drink to help get those guts moving. Other constipated dogs may need veterinary intervention though – either as a one-off or for lifelong management to help maintain normal bowel movements. Your vet will be able to advise on the best treatment for your pet but options include:
- Stool softeners or enemas to help soften the poo and make it easier to pass
- Painkillers
- Some serious cases may need an anaesthetic to have the poo removed manually
and/or hospitalisation and a drip
