1. Understanding why your dog is barking
Dogs bark for lots of different reasons; boredom, fear, frustration, wanting attention… And before you start to address it you need to understand what is triggering this behaviour.
2. Implement management techniques to reduce the bark
You may have to implement things to prevent your dog from initially being triggered. For instance
closing blinds or curtains if they bark at people passing the window. Or playing calming music if loud noises (from the road, neighbours, fireworks etc) cause them to bark.
3. Meeting all of your dog’s needs
Dogs are just like us; we have needs that have to be met for us to feel happy and safe
including having someone to sleep/rest, having access to food and water, getting exercise
having mental stimulation, and knowing we’re loved. If any of these parts are lacking or missing your dog may show you they need it by barking.
4. Training
Acknowledge your dog’s bark with a kindly spoken word of your choice. E.g. “Gotcha” or “That’ll do”. Lead them away from their trigger. Calmly showing no emotion lead them to a distance where they can relax and connect to you instead of the trigger. Look down towards your dog as you walk away – this will reassure them when they look up. Once your dog is calmer and focused enjoy a quiet moment of massage or sometimes drop some dog treats for them to forage and lick.
