Step 1: Be proactive
Your pup will need to toilet first thing in the morning when they wake up. Other times to consider are:
- Around 30 minutes after they have eaten
- Whenever they wake from a nap
- Immediately after they have engaged in play or become really excited
- After greeting a visitor
- Before bed
Step 2: Go outdoors
After the above events or signs are spotted take your puppy outdoors and keep them there until they pee. Following this give them lots of praise and a treat only when they finish.
If they don’t toilet after a couple of minutes bring them back indoors but keep your eye on them as they’ll need to go very soon.
Step 3: Ongoing monitoring
Your pup may get the hang of toilet training quickly with constant monitoring so you can catch the toileting before it happens elsewhere. If you can’t monitor them put them into a playpen with a puppy pad.
The lesson for the puppy is:
- Going to the toilet indoors results in nothing happening e.g. no rewards or praise
- Going to the toilet on the pad results in food, praise, excitement and attention – everything a puppy loves!
