1. Understand your puppy’s needs
Be considerate of your puppy and their needs making sure they have plenty of sleep and that they have the space that they need. Instead of lifting or crowding a puppy get on the floor with them
be gentle and lean back a bit to give them some space as you get used to each other.
2. Create a calm environment
Avoid over-exciting puppies by giving short and sweet cuddles to stop them becoming too excitable. Vigorous play or having children run past are some of the most common triggers that cause dogs to nip.
3. How to react to a puppy biting
The main rule to follow is ‘no teeth on skin’. When a puppy puts its teeth on the skin
simply move yourself away slightly say nothing and calmly turn your attention away from them. Stand up and walk away if they continue.
This tells your pup that if they are rough you do not want to play with them which is what their mother or puppy siblings would do. When they are calmer call them over for a calm massage with a gentle tone of voice.
4. Find alternatives for teething pups
If puppies are chewing to relieve the pain of teething try giving them something appropriate to gnaw on
such as a frozen carrot or a pizzle stick.
