Diet is the key to success in managing kidney disease in cats. In particular the importance of protein must be understood.
In the past owners of cats with kidney disease may have been advised to reduce their cat’s protein intake in the short-term to address excess urea.
However the lack of protein leads to the catabolism or breakdown of the cat’s own muscles in order to metabolise that protein instead.
Today it is advisable to pick good quality proteins to feed your cat.
Move away from subpar proteins or substituting carbohydrates for pure protein sources. The focus should be on feeding highly bioavailable, digestible proteins.
If your cat has or you suspect your cat may have kidney disease, I can arrange a free vet with your a member of our in-house vet team to discuss if raw feeding is suitable for your cat.
