There are two types of diabetes in dogs:
1. Diabetes Insipidus is a very rare disease that causes the dog to drink excessively and urinate excessively but their blood glucose remains normal. If it’s left untreated the dog can become really unwell from dehydration due to the volume of urine that’s passed. This type of diabetes can be caused by kidney disease.
2. Diabetes Mellitus has two variations which are Type 1 and Type 2. The type of diabetes that affects dogs is nearly always Type 1. In humans Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood but in dogs
it’s usually well into adulthood before they develop symptoms.
