There are two types of diabetes in cats:
1. Diabetes Insipidus is a very rare disease that causes the cat to drink and urinate excessively and can even make them incontinent. If left untreated the cat can become really unwell from dehydration due to the volume of dilute urine that’s passed. This type of diabetes can be caused by a hormone deficiency, brain trauma, or kidney disease.
Diabetes Mellitus has two variations which are Type 1 and Type 2. The type of diabetes that affects cats (2) is nearly always Type 2. Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with weight loss, diet change and exercise but usually insulin is also required to be injected by the owner, particularly in the early days of the diagnosis.
