Encourage drinking
Keeping your dog well hydrated is important as they will be losing more fluid than normal in the diarrhoea.
Keep feeding them
The advice used to be to fast dogs that had diarrhoea for 24 hours. This certainly appears outwardly to improve things as if nothing is going in nothing comes out! The problem is that gut cells get some of their nutrition from the food in the gut itself. If you stop feeding your dog you also stop feeding these cells. Any gut cell damage then takes longer to heal potentially exacerbating the original problem. Instead
keep feeding your dog but try small and frequent meals that are gentle on their tummy and help keep those gut cells healthy.
Rest
Avoid strenuous exercise or activity until they have recovered. Learn more about exercising your dog including how much they need to thrive.
Probiotics
Some dogs can benefit from having probiotics. They can help boost the good bacteria that are normal in your dog’s intestines – helping with overall gut health. These can usually be purchased from your vet or online.
Pay attention to the cause
Understanding the cause of your dog’s diarrhoea is essential to help ensure it doesn’t continue (or come back if it is something you can avoid).
