For dogs recovering from an acute episode of pancreatitis and for dogs with chronic pancreatitis
diet is key to support the pancreas and reduce the risk of it becoming inflamed again. This is best achieved by feeding a diet that is highly digestible, low in fat and contains good quality bioavailable proteins. Moist foods are also preferred for dogs with pancreatitis as they tend to clear from the stomach more quickly than dry foods.
Good palatability is also important as dogs with chronic pancreatitis may have altered appetites on some days and consistent good nutrition is important.
It’s important to remember that rich or fatty treats or table scraps can be enough to trigger an acute episode of pancreatitis in dogs that are prone so must be avoided.
Due to high digestibility, raw feeding can be really beneficial for dogs that are prone to
or are known to have pancreatitis. If your dog has pancreatitis, ask to arrange a consultation with one our in-house vet team who will have an in depth chat with you and will be able to advise if we're able to provide a suitable meal plan for your dog.
