The most common causes include:
- Parasites – fleas, mites, and lice - these pesky parasites can cause your pet to itch like crazy
- Ticks
- Infections – bacterial or fungal sores or rashes associated with infection can be itchy
- Anal gland problems could present with the dog trying to scratch its bottom along the ground
- Hypersensitivity – allergies to food, pollens or things your pet’s skin comes directly into contact withcan result in itchiness and a condition known as atopic dermatitis
- Atopic dermatitis is common affecting around 1 in 10 dogs and some breeds such as West Highland White Terriers are more predisposed to the condition

During the months of July to November; harvest mites. It's the larvae stage of the harvest mite that causes problems as they attach them to animals and inject the animal with digestive enzymes to break skin cells that the mites can then feed on. This process causes intense irritation and itching.
